Bear X Saga 405 Review – Affordable Ready-to-Hunt Crossbow

Today we’re doing a review of the Bear X Saga 405 crossbow. Bear X released this crossbow as a Ready-to-Hunt package, so everything you need should be included. The Bear X Saga 405 is a fully adjustable crossbow with all the safety features you’ll need and speeds of up to 405 feet per second!

First Impressions / Size and Weight

Bear Archery has always created high-quality crossbows at low prices. I expect the same from the Bear X Saga 405.

Everything you’ll need to hunt is included with the Bear X Saga 405 Ready-to-Hunt package. A sling, string wax, rail lube, arrows, and even a cloth to clean the scope are included!

This crossbow is fully adjustable. It’s equipped with an adjustable foregrip and adjustable butt-stock. This makes it a great fit and also very comfortable to hold. Its total length comes in at 37.5 inches and an overall weight of about 7.5 pounds. Uncocked the Saga 405 measures 18 inches wide and cocked only 14 inches wide.

Something that’s also instantly noticeable is the dual string suppressor system that comes standard with this crossbow. This greatly reduces the noise and vibrations caused by shooting the crossbow.

Arrows and Speed

Bear X speed-rated the Saga 405 at 405 feet per second with a draw weight of about 210 pounds. This is an incredibly fast and powerful crossbow at such a cheap price.

Included with this package are three 20-inch carbon bolts with field points. These arrows from Bear X feature basic half-moon nocks and they have a total weight of about 370-grains. It has a 270-grain shaft and a 100-grain field tip.

Unfortunately, the Bear X Saga 405 isn’t narrow enough for the special TrueX arrows from Bear X. These TrueX arrows come with TrueX Nock Technology but to be able to shoot them Bear X only recommends using these arrows with their Bear X crossbows that come in at under 12-inches wide when cocked.

Also included is a 4-Arrow Lever Lock quiver. By switching the lever, you can easily attach and detach the quiver to this crossbow.

Optics

Mounted on the Bear X Saga 405 is a non-illuminated 4×32 scope with a multi cross-hair reticle with functioning eye piece. It has a clear image and does its job. At this price level you can’t ask for more, you can however upgrade the scope later.

Bear offers the Bear X Archery Speed Scope for crossbows from 205 to 430 feet per second and you should be able to hit targets at up to 100-yards!

Cocking

Bear X offers a basic T-handle cocking rope for the Bear X Saga 405. As with most rope-cockers, it reduces the draw-weight by about 50% and you’ll definitely need it! Cocking a crossbow with a draw-weight of 210 pounds can be quite difficult, but by using the right technique it should still be very doable.

Bear X does not make any crank-cocking devices and therefore it is not compatible with a crank-cocking device.

Trigger and Safety Features

The Bear X Saga 405 comes with a trigger that has a 4-pound pull. It’s a basic trigger with an ambidextrous safety switch and an anti-dry fire inhibitor prevents you from shooting this crossbow without an arrow loaded.

This trigger has quite a smooth pull but has a bit of creep. Once you’re used to the trigger, this isn’t really an issue anymore.

Assembly and Sighting-In

Bear Archery doesn’t ship the Bear X Saga 405 assembled and sighted in. You’ll have to assemble the crossbow yourself and make sure the scope is properly zeroed in before you go out on a hunting trip.

If you carefully read the instruction manual, assembling the Bear X Saga 405 isn’t a difficult task at all. Due to a lot of experience with assembling crossbows, this crossbow only took me about 5 minutes maximum. Even for beginners and really taking your time, it should take no more than 30 minutes.

Like I already mentioned in the #Optics section, the Bear X Saga features a basic 4×32 scope. During optimal light conditions, I was able to sight it in pretty easily. It only took me 3 shots to get it fully zeroed in. With my fourth shot I already split an arrow.

Range Test

Getting the Bear X Saga 405 to be a comfortable crossbow is very easy with the adjustable butt-stock and foregrip. It’s also pretty lightweight with all the accessories attached to it as well.

During the sighing in of the scope, the arrows were buried deep inside the target so I had to switch it out for a tougher target. It’s an insanely accurate and powerful crossbow at such a low price. Do not try to shoot arrows at the exact same spot, you’ll split a lot of arrows!

After sighting in the scope, I decided to speed test the Saga 405. I’ve shot 2 different arrows with different weights. First up were the standard Bear X arrows that were delivered with the crossbow. It has a total weight of 370 grains and came in at 403 feet per second.

The second arrow I tested was a 433-grain Black Eagle Executioner arrow. This arrow is a bit heavier and will sacrifice some speed but it has a lot more kinetic energy. These came in at 393 feet per second.

Pre-installed on the Bear X Saga 405 comes a dual-suppressor system. This makes it a really quiet crossbow as well.

Storage

At this price you really can’t expect a crossbow case included with the package. Even the sling was a surprise. It is however best to store your crossbow in a case. Using a case will ensure long-life and durability for your crossbow.
